Mesothelioma is one of the most tragic and devastating of all industrial diseases. It is a cancer of the delicate tissues that surround the lungs, intestines, and heart, and is virtually always caused by asbestos exposure. This cancer is incredibly difficult to treat because it takes many years to develop, and unfortunately by the time any symptoms appear, conventional treatments are ineffective. Many people who develop mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases were exposed to the substance fairly young in life.
When a person inhales or ingests asbestos, an irreversible and often devastating process begins. The small particles are extremely small but extremely sharp, so much so that they can pierce organs and shred the mesothelium. This protective membrane provides lubrication that allows the lungs, intestines, and heart to move properly, and without this moisture these organs begin to fail. Furthermore, the asbestos causes the mesothelium to mutate into cancer which can eventually spread to every part of the body. Most people who have mesothelioma rarely survive longer than five years after initial diagnosis.
Mesothelioma is notoriously difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are initially very subtle and can often be confused with less dangerous conditions. Depending on the organ affected by mesothelioma symptoms can include shortness of breath, chest pain, weight loss but increase in abdomen size, anemia, bowel obstruction, and blood clotting abnormalities. If the cancer has spread to other parts of the body other symptoms can include swelling, difficulty swallowing, and generalized pain.
Doctors have limited options when it comes to treating mesothelioma, and the few alternatives available only prolong life and alleviate pain, as there is presently no cure and the disease is always fatal. Radiation treatments, surgery, and chemotherapy have been the traditional options for combating the spread of cancers, but these conventional treatment strategies can only postpone the inevitable deadly nature of the disease. However, new treatments such as photodynamic, angiogenesis, and gene therapy provide new hope for mesothelioma sufferers everywhere as the battle for a cure rages on.
There is some hope for those who have been touched by this terrible disease. Victims of mesothelioma and grieving family members who have lost someone to the cancer have legal options – and many may be entitled to financial compensation for the profound physical and emotional struggle that they have been forced to endure.
